What's the atmosphere like?

When there is a big sporting event on TV, the main bar is crammed. At other times, you'll find a mixed aged group in the cheery atmosphere.

Describe the decor?

The bar's a big, roomy affair with a good pool table at the rear. There is plenty space for people to spread out and relax. The walls feature stone- carved figures representing the four elements. In the lounge/restaurant, it's bright and welcoming with three beautifully- restored old stained glass windows which were part of the original Grist Boll pub that stood here. There's a nice old open stonework wall, too.

Who drinks here?

The Four ElementsThe pub has two pool teams (one mixed) which participate in the Renfrewshire League and you'll find plenty of sharp shooters in the bar at any given time. Apart from that, the bar attracts couples and sports fans. Every few weeks, music lovers pour in to hear live rock and R&B bands.

What about the staff?

A busy establishment such as this requires an army of helpers and there are no fewer than 12 part-timers while owners Pauline and Stuart Murphy co-ordinate activities. The bar supervisor is Elaine McGreish and the man who works the magic in the kitchen is Mark Silverwood.

Is the food any good?

Since the restaurant opened for business 10 months ago, it has built up a fine reputation for its ever- changing menu. Starters range from mussels in white wine, parsley, garlic and cream sauce to poached salmon sausage with caramelised red onion (£4.50).

There are mouth-watering main courses such as sea bass with confit of leek and fresh tomato sauce (pounds 13.95). Less fancy meals such as battered haddock and steak pie are also served at the bar - and at pounds 3.95, they have a less fancy price tag attached, too.
