Buffy creator to appear at festival

15:25, Jan 30 2013

The creator of cult television series Buffy The Vampire Slayer is to appear at the Glasgow Film Festival next month.

Joss Whedon, who also wrote the 2012 blockbuster film Avengers Assemble, will attend the festival's closing gala, which is the UK premiere of his film Much Ado About Nothing on Sunday, February 24. Tickets for the screening sold out in less than an hour.

Also making an appearance on Glasgow's red carpet will be Oscar-winning film-maker Neil Jordan, whose credits include The Crying Game and Interview With A Vampire.

Joining him to promote vampire thriller Byzantium is former Bond girl Gemma Arterton, who was in Quantum Of Solace, and Saoirse Ronan, who starred in Atonement.

Byzantium will screen as part of the Film4 FrightFest, which takes place on February 22 and 23 during the festival.

Eli Roth, known for horror film Hostel and Inglourious Basterds, visits Glasgow as his film Aftershock makes its debut in the UK, also part of FrightFest.

Glasgow Film Festival is launched on Valentine's Day with the glossy 1950s-set romcom Populaire. The film is nominated for six Caesar Awards, including in the best first film category for director Regis Ronsard, who will attend the event.

Actors David Hayman and James Cosmo will also be in Glasgow. Hayman is promoting the film Sawney: Flesh Of Man, a modern-day take on the legend of Scottish cannibal king Sawney Bean. Cosmo features in a record five films in this year's programme and will be in conversation about his career.

Channel 4's Fresh Meat actors Greg McHugh (Howard), Kimberly Nixon (Josie) and Charlotte Richie (Oregon) join Annie Griffin, director of The Book Group and Festival, and Sam Bain, writer on Peep Show and The Thick Of It, for a masterclass during Glasgow Youth Film Festival.

Glasgow Film Festival runs from February 14 to 24.
