Dummett delighted to be back at St Mirren

Loan star Paul Dummett knew a return to St Mirren was the right move ... when he found himself jumping up and down in front of his telly while watching the Buddies beat Celtic.

Dummett, who spent the first half of this season on loan at Saints, was reduced to the role of stay-at-home spectator last Sunday as Danny Lennon’s shock troops secured their place in the Scottish Communities League Cup Final.

And the 21-year-old Newcastle United full-back has revealed he was on cloud nine as he watched the Hampden heroes pull off Mission Improbable.

Dummett, who agreed a transfer deadline-day return to Paisley on another loan deal that will keep him at the club for the rest of the season, told Express Sports: “I knew St Mirren had a massive cup tie against Celtic and I really didn’t want to miss it, so I arranged to come up to Glasgow for the game.

“I had my suit on and was just about to leave the house when I got a phone call from Newcastle telling me to get into training.

“I wasn’t best pleased but I caught the match on TV and was jumping up and down like a fan.

“I was willing them to score every time they got near the box.

“Getting to the final is a tremendous feat.”

Dummett, who is available for selection ahead of today’s Scottish Cup clash with St Johnstone, is convinced he is a better player now than he was before his first loan spell in Paisley.

And he’s looking forward to further improvement in the months ahead now that he’s back with the Buddies.

He added: “There was a lot of talk about me returning to Paisley during the transfer window but Newcastle had a lot of injuries and I was told to stay put.

“I managed to make my United debut in the FA Cup at Brighton and that was a dream come true. I was buzzing.

“Now I’m back at St Mirren but Graham Carey has been playing at left-back – and playing very well – so I don’t expect to walk straight back into the team.

“Naturally, I’m here to play football but I know I will have to fight for my place.”
