Fresh Meat stars hold workshop

21:25, Feb 8 2013

The cast and crew of popular television programme Fresh Meat have held a workshop with aspiring young writers and actors at Glasgow Youth Film Festival.

The show's co-writer Sam Bain was joined by actors Greg McHugh (Howard), Kimberley Nixon (Josie) and Charlotte Ritchie (Oregon), as well as director Annie Griffin, to take part in the "masterclass" event at the Glasgow Film Theatre.

It was a full house in Cinema 1 as the audience was shown an episode of Fresh Meat before getting to quiz the panel.

McHugh said he was delighted to be home in Scotland and invited to take part in the Glasgow Youth Film Festival. He said: "It's an honour to be asked to be honest, to be here and part of a film festival.

"What's really encouraging is that it's a youth festival and it's young people showing that they can be proactive and creative. Hopefully we can answer questions in a way that they find helpful and/or interesting and/or funny."

Bain created Fresh Meat with his writing partner Jesse Armstrong. The pair are award-winning writers having received a British Comedy Award for Fresh Meat and a Bafta for Peep Show.

Bain talked about the challenges of keeping the momentum of a programme going.

He said: "That's one of the funny things with a show doing well, immediately you want to take it forward and make it better but I think it's important to embrace that rather than the other, worse danger and get complacent. I think that's much more dangerous to go, 'Its funny, let's relax and just have fun and not work hard'. That is a big problem.

He added: "I don't know how many people in the audience want to be in film and telly but it would be nice to inspire them a bit."

The Glasgow Youth Film Festival runs until Wednesday February 13 and is the precursor to the Glasgow Film Festival which starts on Valentine's Day and ends on Sunday February 24.
