Income tax could fund more teachers

Cash earmarked to replace the council tax could pay for almost 10,000 new teachers, Labour said.

The party called on the SNP government to use part of the £281 million needed for the proposed local income tax to fund education in Scotland.

The government insisted it was investing in teachers and creating a "fairer and lower" tax, based on the ability to pay.
