Some cities have more vacancies than unemployed people, while in other parts of the country there are over 50 applicants for every job, according to new research.
Jobsearch site Adzuna said Aberdeen, Guildford and Cambridge were the best places to find work, with fewer than one jobseeker per vacancy, while Hull was the worst, with 51.
Sunderland was second in the list with 42, followed by the Wirral (38), Wolverhampton (17) and Bradford (16), the study of 50 cities found.
Competition for jobs in London has reached a one-year high, while the biggest decline in the number of jobseekers per vacancy over the past six months has been in Crawley, Brighton, Newcastle upon Tyne and Leeds.
Meanwhile, average salaries in a number of cities have fallen since last summer, down by 9% in Wales, 7% in the West Midlands and 6% in Eastern England, said the report.
Average wages in areas such as Nottingham, Preston and Stoke-on-Trent have increased since last August, it was found.
Engineering and computing are the top hiring sectors across the UK, and vacancies for bar staff have dropped by a fifth since Christmas, while London is the top city for recruiting teachers and chefs.
Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said: "Jobseekers, particularly young people and graduates, should be looking to arm themselves with data to help them target their job search in parts of Britain where they have the best possible chance of finding work."
