Buddies boss Danny Lennon last night give his backing to the appointment of Gordon Strachan as the new Scotland manager.

Former Coventry, Southampton, Celtic and Middlesbrough gaffer Strachan was unveiled as Scotland’s main man during a press conference at Hampden on Tuesday.

And Lennon, who knows Strachan well from his UEFA Pro-Licence days, is convinced the one-time Man Utd player can revive the national team’s fortunes.

He told Express Sports: “It’s an appointment I really favour. I’m all for it.

“I think Gordon can get the very best out of the squad of players – and the up-and-coming ones too.

“I’m really hopeful that, under Gordon, we can get our national team going again.

“I was lucky enough to spend 45 minutes in Gordon’s company when I was doing my UEFA Pro-Licence and there was plenty he said about the game that rubbed off on me.”

Lennon also told how 55-year-old Strachan invited him down to Middlesbrough shortly after he took over as St Mirren manager so he could see how the English club was being run .

He added: “I can’t thank him enough for that experience.”
