Loan star Newton edges closer to first team debut

Loan star Conor Newton has moved closer to making his first team debut for St Mirren after starring for the club’s Under-20s team in their win over Dundee.

Newton joined the Buddies from Newcastle United earlier this month on a loan deal which will see him stay in Paisley for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old midfielder was an unused sub in the 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock at St Mirren Park on January 2 but is hoping to be involved when Danny Lennon’s men return to SPL action against Ross County on Saturday.

And Saints fans got their first glimpse of what Newton can do when he lined up for the Clydesdale Bank Under-20s League match with Dundee on Monday night.

The Magpies starlet helped the young Buddies to a 1-0 win against their Dark Blues counterparts, with Jon Scullion scoring the all-important goal, with just three minutes remaining.

It was the fourth straight victory for St Mirren in the Under-20s League, following previous wins over Celtic, Kilmarnock and St Johnstone.

Their next match is scheduled for Tuesday, January 22, when they will head north to the Highlands to face Ross County.
