08:25, Mar 18 2013

A young man is being treated in hospital after a blaze in a second-floor flat.

Crews were called to the kitchen fire in Hawick, in the Borders.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said it was "well alight" on their arrival, and firefighters issued survival guidance to residents.

A 20-year-old man was taken to Borders General Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns to his hands.

A Staffordshire bull terrier died in the blaze.
