Pixar film-maker to mentor students

10:25, Jan 24 2013

The director of the Oscar-nominated film Brave is to share his expertise with art school students.

Mark Andrews will spend two weeks working with students at the Glasgow School of Art in April.

It will be the first time a film-maker from Pixar, the multi-award-winning company, has mentored UK students.

Mr Andrews is one of the leading film-makers at Pixar Animation Studios and has worked on blockbuster films including The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille and his directorial debut, Brave, which has been nominated for an Academy Award.

The Scottish-themed film picked up the Golden Globe for best animated film earlier this month and is in contention for a Bafta.

Mr Andrews's ancestors came from Torridon in Wester Ross in the Highlands and he has said one of the highlights of making Brave was travelling to Scotland for research trips.

From April 8 to 19 he will give lectures, lead specialist workshops and contribute to a GSA project.

He said: "Scotland is the most beautiful and inspiring land that I know. The rolling hills, the sense of deep-rooted mystery, and most of all, the people, are rich with stories. Brave could not have been made without Scotland, and I'm thrilled to come to the Glasgow School of Art to give back to the people and the place that so moved me."

Professor Seona Reid, director of the GSA, said: "We are delighted that a film-maker of Mark's calibre has offered to come and work with our students, sharing his considerable experience and expertise with the next generation of creative talent. Pixar is a world-leading animation film company and the insight Mark will give to our students will be invaluable as they develop their own practice."

Mr Andrews was invited to tutor Scottish students by Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop after a visit to Disney Pixar's California headquarters last year.
