Residents moved out amid flats fire

08:25, Jan 8 2013

Residents of a four-storey block of city flats have been led to safety by firefighters after an early-morning blaze.

The fire service was called to Dowanhill Street in the west end of Glasgow at 4.30am after a blaze broke out on the first floor of the building.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus saw that residents safely left the premises and crews from Cowcaddens, Maryhill, Yorkhill and Polmadie continue to tackle the blaze.

There are no reports of any casualties.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said: "At present the firefighting operations now mainly consist of stripping down damaged material to check for any signs of fire spread and ensure all pockets of fire are extinguished.

"The cause of the fire at this stage is unknown and a full investigation is under way by Strathclyde Fire & Rescues Incident Research and Investigation Section."
