Brendan Jones, a forecaster for Meteogroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "The strong winds are pushing north-eastwards but they will linger over the north of the country and many of the islands for much of the day.
"Gusts of 84mph have been recorded in Lerwick this morning and they likely remain in place until the low-pressure system clears. As far as the mainland goes, the strongest winds should have passed from the central belt, where 57mph gusts were recorded in Salsburgh, North Lanarkshire.
"As the system moves, north Aberdeenshire could experience winds of around 70mph for a period later today."
Transport has been disrupted on the islands, with ferries cancelled and many roads open to the high winds and sea spray.
Northern Constabulary said the Baleshare, Eriskay and Braigh causeways were closed on Tuesday night, while on the mainland the A82 between Glencoe and Tyndrum and the Kessock Bridge of the A9 was shut to high-sided vehicles.
