Ross targets home victory

Dec 9 2009

by Paul Behan, Paisley Daily Express

ST MIRREN defender Jack Ross last night vowed the Buddies wont be handing out any early Christmas presents to struggling Falkirk this weekend when the Bairns come to town for a crunch SPL showdown.

Eddie Mays men are currently five points behind Saints in the table but the Paisley players will extend that gap to a healthy eight points on Saturday if they record a rare home win.

So far, the Buddies have only tasted one home win in the league this calendar year a 2-1 victory over Hearts two months ago. And Gus MacPhersons team only have two more opportunities to improve that depressing statistic.

After taking on the Bairns, they can look forward to welcoming Aberdeen to St Mirren Park for a Boxing Day cracker.

And right-back Ross, 33, is determined to play his part in making sure Saints keep it tight at the back so they can take maximum points from those two home games.

He told Express Sports: I think it took us far too long to get that first victory at home in the league and we have not managed to put another one on the board since then.

I think we should have managed that, especially when you look at the games we played against Motherwell and Hibs, who are both good sides. On those occasions, we played really well but we didnt get a victory. We want to do something about that in the remaining fixtures before January.

Ross believes that, if Saints harbour seriousambitions of challenging for a top six finish in the SPL this season, they have to back that up with many more victories, especially in their own backyard.

He added: When we play at home, we believe we can go and win a game of football. We have to think like that because, if we have ambitions of doing well in the league, then we need to have a foundation to build on.

That comes from winning home games and our approach will be no different this Saturday.

Ross has a tremendous recent record against Falkirk and has yet to experience a defeat against his former club since he moved to St Mirren in August last year.

He is not the only Saint with a Falkirk connection as midfield ace Steven Thomson and striker Michael Higdon also enjoyed spells with the Bairns.

Ross said: Im looking forward to Saturday as I always enjoy playing against Falkirk.

Ive got a good record against them since Ive been here and, hopefully, that will continue this week.
