Saints end interest in trialist O’Brien

ST MIRREN last night ended their interest in Irish winger Alan O’Brien.

The 26-year-old Dubliner had joined the Buddies on trial earlier this week and was hoping to win a deal at the Paisley club after being released by English League One outfit Yeovil Town.

However, Saints manager Danny Lennon has confirmed that O’Brien has now moved on.

Lennon said: “Alan was in for a few days but nothing will come of that one. We won’t be pursuing the option of signing him.”

O’Brien began his career with Newcastle United, where he worked under Saints coach Tommy Craig, and he has five caps for the Republic of Ireland.

However, he failed to establish himself as a first-team regular at St James Park and was eventually farmed out on loan to Carlisle United.

O’Brien later spent two years at Hibs, followed by two years at Swindon Town, before joining Yeovil.

However, having captured Dougie Imrie from Hamilton Accies last week, Lennon now has more options in wider areas of the pitch.

Lennon added: “You never say never during the transfer window but we’re happy with where we are, especially with what we achieved by keeping Jim Goodwin here.

“I’d like to come out of the transfer window unscathed, in terms of players going out.

“The deadline is only a few days away now but those few days will probably feel like another month to us!”
