The playing surface at St Mirren Park has been hailed as the best in Scotland.

And the glittering praise is sure to be a major boost to groundsman at the stadium, Tam Docherty.

The surface will be used more and more often in the coming months as St Mirren Park once again prepares to host Scotland’s Under-21 home matches, this time for the 2015 UEFA European Championship qualifiers for the Czech Republic.

And Scotland Under-21s coach Billy Stark is delighted that his side’s home matches will be staged at Greenhill Road.

Stark said: “Tam Docherty, the groundsman at St Mirren Park, does a fantastic job and the pitch has always been of the highest order.

“To be fair, it’s probably the best pitch in Scotland.

“In a general sense, the way we want to play, then the pitch, is important, no doubt about it.”

Stark also revealed how the Buddies came top when choosing a venue for Scotland’s forthcoming home matches.

He said: “There were a number of clubs showing a keen interest and it was a pretty thorough process in terms of evaluating everything – and St Mirren came out on top. So having previous experience of playing here, we’re delighted to be back.”
