Steven Thompson: League Cup Final win was written in the stars
St Mirren's Steven Thompson R celebrates with team mate Paul Dummett after scoring

GOALSCORING hero Steven Thompson last night revealed how St Mirren's League Cup Final win yesterday was written in the stars.

Thompson, who scored St Mirren's second goal when he bulleted home Paul Dummett's cross, said manager Danny Lennon told him the win was there for the taking.

And following a disappointing first half performance Saints went out and did the business.

Thompson said: "The gaffer said to me at half-time, just before we went back out, 'it's written in the stars 'Thommo'.

"And I already had that in my mind.

"I have been thinking about nothing else since we won the semi-final against Celtic.

"To say it's been playing on my mind is an understatement. I have went through a world of different emotions.

"And there's been a lot of anxiety this week.

"But we prepared extremely well for the game and from a personal point of view I am delighted for the players, the manager and, of course, the fans.

"Thompson said no words could perfectly illustrate what it means to have a winners medal around his neck at full-time yesterday.

He said: "I am finding it difficult to explain what it means to me but it does mean everything- and to the supporters.

"To be involved in that moment, to haver scored in that moment, there's no words in the English dictionary  to sum it up.

"The players had to realise what this meant and they did."

Us older guys kept saying to the younger lads that it was a chance to become a part of history, get our names in the bricks, so to speak.

"And I think the character we showed by coming from a goal down to win tells its own story about this special group of players.

"We're absolutely delighted to win this trophy and to end a 26 year drought without a major cup trophy, really is special."
