Win over County left Danny a headbanger

Danny Lennon has urged his Buddies to save him from a Highland headache tonight as they travel north to take on Ross County.

The last time the two teams met on SPL business was back in September when Lennon’s side conjured up a thrilling last-gasp 5-4 victory in Paisley.

Although Saints took all the points on that occasion, Lennon admitted he was left banging his head at the way Saints leaked four goals.

Tonight, though, he’s hoping for a much tighter all-round display but the same outcome – three points.

Lennon said: “You get those freak games every now and then.

“To score five at home but to lose four – I can tell you both managers were banging their heads afterwards.

“I was the happier man, though, because we got the positive outcome but that was quite a bizarre game.

“I think we’ll be hard pressed to get that again.”

Saints did not have time to enjoy Saturday’s 3-1 win over Dundee as they were back at their Ralston training HQ on Sunday to prepare for tonight’s trip to the Highlands.

Lennon explained: “We worked on things that we think we can exploit and we bedded it down on Monday.

“It’s a very difficult challenge for us.

“Since Ross County lost their unbeaten record, their league form has been indifferent.

“However, even when they have lost, they competed very well. They will present a real challenge for us.

“But we also beat them in the Scottish Cup replay 2-1 last season and we’d like to continue that form.

“St Johnstone and Dundee United have gone up there recently and picked up all three points and our objective is to do the same.

“The incentive is there for us – we can go above them if we win. It’s what we’ll be looking to do.”

Saints go into tonight’s game buoyed by the weekend win over Dundee and Lennon hopes that momentum continues.

He said: “We’re on the back of a very good performance on Saturday.

“We were delighted to get that win and it breeds confidence within the group.

“The players have been knocking on the door in the last few weeks but they’ve not got their rewards.

“Now we have to create some positive momentum on the back of the Dundee game, although that’s easier said than done.

“We’re only five points behind from where we were at this stage last season but we’re a lot closer to the top due to the way results have panned out – it’s very tight.

“We are capable of putting some results together and, if we can do that, then we can push ourselves back up this league.”
