Woman stopped by bogus policeman

12:25, Jan 4 2013

A woman has been stopped and questioned by a man pretending to a police officer.

The 56-year-old was signalled to pull over as she was driving between Springfield and Cupar in Fife at about 6.40am on Thursday, police said.

The woman refused to answer more questions when the man was unable to show a warrant card.

She drove to the local police station but he did not follow.

The man is 5ft 8in, stocky and has a local accent, dark hair and sideburns. He was standing beside a light-coloured compact BMW car.

Chief Inspector Jill Harper from Fife Police said: "Incidents like this are extremely rare and we are looking for members of the public to help us identify this man."

The woman acted correctly by asking for identification and then contacting police when none was produced, she said.
